THE OFFICERS

TRAPPER

Feet kicked up on the coffee table, I kept my gaze on the TV screen as I shoveled another forkful of ramen noodles into my open mouth. The garage door slammed shut, rattling the only picture hanging on the hall wall, signaling my best friend and roommate was home. Technically, he was also my boss, being the captain of the small police force in Grandger, Texas, me a smidge below him in rank as lieutenant. There were only a handful of officers on the force, with the local constable picking up the shifts, too, when we had gaps in the schedule.

“Good shift?” I called over my shoulder as I continued to watch the terrible porno I’d accidentally slipped into the DVD player and pressed Play to watch while I ate dinner. A responding grunt, Shade’s typical response, sounded before his massive form filled the living room doorway. “I left a package of ramen out for you.”

I was a saint like that.

“The fuck you watching?” he grumbled. Yanking at his uniform, he began tearing it off piece by piece, setting his weapons down carefully on the side table before going to his pants. I knew it had nothing to do with what was on the screen that made him quickly strip. Even with the cold December weather, all the gear we wore to keep us safe was hot as hell. By the end of each shift, it was all we could do to get home before we took everything off. “Turn that shit off. Dumbass.”

The spoon rattled against the ceramic edge when I dropped it into the bowl. With an annoyed sigh, I snatched the remote off the couch and hit the Pause button, freezing the woman currently getting railed by two men with her mouth gaping and eyes squeezed shut.

Shade rubbed a hand down his face and plopped into the leather recliner, now stripped down to his briefs. I watched as his gaze flicked from the screen to the only picture in our house. Desire, sadness, and desperation leaked off my friend. Shaking his head, he ran a hand through his thick hair.

“I get it, man. I miss her, too, but you know Jessa wouldn’t have wanted you to stop living,” I said, gaze now locked on my lukewarm meal. Appetite gone, I set my measly lunch on the metal coffee table.

“I’m living. Just wish she was still here living it with us.”

I nodded in agreement, face in my hands as happy memories played in my mind, stirred by the video still paused. Three years ago, the love of our lives, Jessa, was killed in a car wreck that not only took her life but sometimes it felt like mine and Shade’s too. We were inseparable during high school, the three of us best friends that morphed into more one day. It was us against the world until she was taken from us unexpectedly.
